The European Court of Justice has ruled that the use of bacteriophages to combat the outgrowth of Listeria monocytogenes in food is permitted.

Bacteriophages are natural antibodies against bacteria, such as Listeria monocytogenes. Phages are considered processing aids that can be used at various moments in a production process. Bacteriophages are therefore not required to be declared an ingredient or additive.
